Classic Builder for University of Plymouth

The requirement

The University of Plymouth sought to enhance the appearance and safety of its lecture room televisions during construction works undertaken by Classic Builders. IT equipment, while essential for modern classrooms and lecture theatres, often results in cluttered fixtures and excessive cabling, creating both a visual distraction and a potential trip hazard.

To address this, the university commissioned five metal mesh TV enclosures in a range of vibrant colours, designed to conceal TV stands and cabling while also serving as a striking feature within the lecture spaces. The enclosures needed to be both visually appealing and functional, with easy access for maintenance without requiring full disassembly.

The solution

As a Plymouth-based manufacturer, Aldermans was ideally positioned to undertake the fabrication work on behalf of Classic Builders. With extensive in-house metal fabrication processes, Aldermans maintained tight control over timescales, quality, and costs throughout production.

Although an initial design concept was provided, Aldermans played a key role in developing the design further and creating detailed production drawings. A particular challenge was ensuring that individual panels could be removed for maintenance without requiring the entire unit to be dismantled. One of Aldermans’ apprentices, Felix, took a leading role in refining the design and overseeing production.

The enclosures were fabricated from 2mm and 3mm thick CR4 mild steel, chosen for its suitability for a powder-coated finish. The screen aperture was made from 4mm thick Lexan® clear polycarbonate, providing a strong, durable alternative to glass.

Manufacturing involved a range of precision engineering processes. Perforations were created using an Amada EMZ turret punch, while the parts and bracings were laser cut, drilled, tapped, and deburred using an Amada fibre laser. The components were then folded using a CNC press brake, ensuring the five distinctive folds on each corner of the enclosure. Aldermans’ fabrication department test-assembled the five units using nuts and bolts before progressing them to the powder coating line, where each enclosure was finished in a different RAL colour. Matching wall mountings were also manufactured to ensure safe and secure installation.

The outcome

The project was successfully completed in the spring of 2019, with all on-site work finalised by August, ensuring the enclosures were ready for the start of the university term.

The University of Plymouth’s new TV enclosures achieved the desired balance of safety, organisation, and aesthetic appeal, eliminating cable clutter while creating a bold, visually striking feature in its lecture rooms. Aldermans’ expertise in metal fabrication and in-house capabilities enabled the project to be delivered efficiently, on time, and to a high standard.

Client testimonial

“The TV enclosures are well constructed, robust and colourful, and look impressive in-situ. We were pleased to be able to work with Aldermans on this project and would welcome doing so again in future.”
