GM Coachwork – Citroën SpaceTourer Quantum WAV
The requirement
GM Coachwork is one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of wheelchair accessible vehicles. Its Citroën SpaceTourer Quantum is a spacious, modern WAV built around a low angle access ramp, secure second row wheelchair positioning and seating for up to seven occupants, giving passengers an inclusive travel experience without compromising on comfort or style.
Every component in the SpaceTourer Quantum has to combine strength, durability and precision, so GM Coachwork needed a manufacturing partner who could deliver consistently high quality parts at volume, while keeping pace with an evolving product. The mobility vehicle sector doesn’t leave much room for error, so reliability and repeatability were non-negotiable.
The solution
Aldermans has worked alongside GM Coachwork since 2014, supporting the SpaceTourer Quantum from early prototypes through to full scale production. The relationship covers CNC machining, laser cutting, CNC press brake folding, tube manipulation, aluminium fabrication, MIG and TIG welding, powder coating, and mechanical assembly and kitting, drawing on Aldermans’ full in-house capability rather than outsourcing any stage of the process.
Components are manufactured directly from 3D CAD models, with Aldermans’ engineers optimising each part for efficient production without losing the dimensional accuracy and structural integrity that automotive applications demand. Every part goes through strict quality control before it leaves the factory, so GM Coachwork can trust the consistency of what arrives.
A Just in Time supply model keeps the partnership responsive: GM Coachwork can call off components as production schedules require, rather than holding excess stock, and Aldermans can turn around design refinements quickly as the vehicle range develops.
The outcome
Twelve years on, the relationship between Aldermans and GM Coachwork has grown into one of trust and shared standards, built on repeatable production, rapid prototyping and a manufacturing partner who can flex as new requirements come in. Aldermans’ complete in-house offer, from fabrication through to finishing and assembly, means GM Coachwork has one point of contact rather than multiple suppliers to coordinate.
