Plymouth is gaining national recognition for its efforts to promote women in STEM careers, with local businesses, educators, and role models collaborating to challenge industry stereotypes and create inclusive pathways into engineering and manufacturing.

Aldermans Champions Women in STEM

A City Taking the Lead

Ranked among the top ten UK cities for engineering and manufacturing employment, Plymouth has become a key driver in inspiring the next generation of female talent. From defence and marine to advanced manufacturing, opportunities for women in technical careers are expanding rapidly.

Local organisations are not just discussing the importance of inclusion; they are taking tangible steps. Babcock International, a major employer based at Devonport Royal Dockyard, is improving gender diversity across its workforce through dedicated training programmes and a strong commitment to future progress. City College Plymouth also plays a vital role, providing high-quality STEM education and support services that help women succeed in technical subjects.

Real Role Models Leading the Way

Among those supporting the cause is Aldermans’ Managing Director, Karen Friendship. A qualified Civil Engineer, Karen actively promotes STEM and mentors students and young professionals across Plymouth. Her passion for the sector is complemented by a strong belief in the importance of visibility and community engagement.

“At Aldermans, we promote and employ apprentices, offer site visits to our factory, and each year in September, we support Make UK National Manufacturing Day,” she explains. “From a personal level, I believe in the power of positive role models for other young engineers and girls, just starting out, by mentoring at the University of Plymouth and offering my time at various local schools and STEM events.”

Karen’s involvement also includes supporting the Plymouth Manufacturers’ Group (PMG), where engineering businesses across the region collaborate to raise awareness, share expertise, and build long-term relationships within the broader community.

A Shared Mission for the Future

Recent initiatives supported by Plymouth Manufacturers’ Group (PMG) have helped highlight the stories of women working in technical roles across the region. Their message is clear: Plymouth is not only creating opportunities but also working together to eliminate barriers and reshape the future of engineering for the better.

At Aldermans, we take pride in being part of this growing movement and remain dedicated to promoting the value of STEM careers for people from all backgrounds. Through ongoing investment, mentorship, and collaboration, we believe Plymouth can become a national example of inclusive engineering.
